Client Spotlight: Señor Moose
Since 2005 Kathleen Andersen has been Seattle's matriarch of Mexican cuisine. From homemade salsas that have been a staple of the restaurant for the past decade, to creamy paletas (popsicles) in flavors like avocado and hibiscus flower, Señor Moose's creations never fail to impress our city’s discerning palates.
“She knows what to do with pork” said a fellow Señor Moose devotee one evening over a quadruplet of carnitas tacos and mango margaritas. And it’s true. Kathleen spent 25 years in Mexico, before returning to Ballard to be with her family, and setting her sights on opening a restaurant:
“Originally, I opened it as American food … It was never really my intention to have a Mexican restaurant, but I did because of the things I learned in Mexico, and the amazing women I cooked with, the amazing people who helped me, who I just watched and watched …These are those recipes, and still we’re doing them.”
Kathleen has deep roots not only in Mexican culture and cuisine, but also Mexican coffee. Before her return to the United States Kathleen owned a cafe and roasting company with her then-husband. “The first coffee I really ever drank was espresso and there was no doubt that we’d have espresso [at Señor Moose].” So when it came time to choose a roaster for her restaurant, Kathleen found herself remembering a previous cup of coffee shared with La Marzocco CEO Kent Bakke:
“I was with Kent having coffee…and I had decaf (because I was going through a decaf phase) and I said to him ‘God forbid I ever open another restaurant, I would buy this coffee because this decaf is so good.’ And it was True North coffee. So when I came up [to Ballard], they were the people I called.”
Señor Moose has been serving up perfectly brewed True North ever since. Kathleen admitted, “I’m very loyal, but even as loyal as I may be, if the coffee wasn’t good, I would say ‘I love you but bye-bye!’ It’s about loyalty to a good flavor, and loyalty to a consistent coffee, and they’re always bettering it. Always.”
